Here’s some information to help you answer the question.
Choose a type of home.
Choosing the type of home you live in will activate pre-selected features such as number of rooms and appliances. This information will feed into the estimated total electricity use and estimated electricity cost.
Choose the home's heating and cooling system.
During the winter months, only heating options are available. During the summer months, only cooling options are available.
An explanation of some of the appliances you may have:
Natural gas, oil, and other furnace types Central heating in your house may come from natural gas, or other forms of energy. Using a fan to distribute warm air is an important part of your electricity costs. Select this if it applies to you.
Baseboard electric heaters This type of appliance is usually in homes that do not have central heating. An electric baseboard heater contains an electrical heating element that heats up as electric current flows through the element. Baseboard heaters are usually installed under windows, so the heater’s rising warm air will counteract falling cool air from the cold window glass.
Heat pump Ground source heat pumps use the ground as a source for heat. Heat pumps transfer heat by circulating a substance called a refrigerant through a cycle of evaporation and condensation. In the winter, the cycle draws heat from the ground to heat the inside. The opposite happens in the summer season to cool your home - it draws heat from the inside back to the ground.
Hot water radiator A hot water radiator is a radiator that is filled with water that is usually heated with natural gas and pumped into the radiator. As the water cools, it gives off heat.
Electric water heater Who doesn’t like a hot shower? Similar to baseboard heaters, electric hot water heaters use an element to heat the water.
Natural gas water heater Natural gas hot water heaters are the most popular way to heat water. A gas heater will have a line labelled ‘natural gas’ running into the tank. Does your tank have this?
